Colonies Zone Championship results 2008
The Warrenton Masters Swim Team competed recently in
the Colonies Zone Swimming Championships, which were held April 11th through
April 14th, at George Mason University.
The Colonies Zone meet attracts hundreds of swimmers from nine northeastern
states. The range of competition is both broad and deep, including both
novices and former Olympians.
Stephanie Strong led the Warrenton women with a number of fine performances.
She swam the 100-yard freestyle in 1:10.13, the 500-yard free in 7:32.47,
and the 200-yard free in 2:47.47, which placed her 5th in the 30-34 year-old
age group.
On the men's side, Todd Goins set a personal record of 37.61 in the 50-yard
breast stroke, which was good for 7th place in the 45-49 year old age group.
He swam a solid 1:00.44 in the 100-yard free, and a quick 26.60 in the
50-yard free.
Also on the men's side, Troy Holland set a P.R. of 5:55.80 in the 500-yard
freestyle, which placed him 7th among 40 to 44 year-old men. He swam the
100-yard free in 1:00.02, the 200-yard free in 2:13.56, and the 50-yard free
in 27.74.
But the most impressive performance of the meet was turned in by four
members of the Virginia Masters Swim Team, in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
In that event, a new national record of 12:03.97 was set by Betsy Durrant
(age 66), Ida Hlavacek (age 65), Beth Schreiner (age 67), and Barb Zaremski
(age 70).
The Warrenton Masters Swim Team meets on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at
the Warrenton Aquatics and Recreational Facility. The team is open to all
adult swimmers (fitness, tri-athletes, competitive, non-competitive) who
want to improve their fitness through swimming. The team helps swimmers
achieve specific goals and offers active support for a healthy lifestyle
through friendship and camaraderie. For more information go to information@warrentonmasters.org,
